The Future?

The (UK) Building Industry, like many other industries are facing challenging times; budget cuts, credit restrictions, increased competition, unemployment and lots of uncertainty.
Mergers and takeovers happen daily, many people are working part time, supply chain partnerships are dissolving and sub-contracting and (near)outsourcing are increasing. And as a whole the Industry might appear to becoming more and more fragmented? Is that the case?
The number of start-up companies is increasing; established brands are rethinking their strategies, exploring new markets, seeking new partnerships and adapting to be more resilient.
Will being put through the fire produce any gold?
I would be interested to hear your views.

  2. The above situation reflects the events in the developed countries. It is clear that the building industry is making appreciable recovery in some of these countries like US and Germany while budget cuts and reduced investments are gaining momentum in Britain and Ireland.

The reverse is the case in developing countries such as Nigeria. Before the recession, the building industry has been in doldrums characterized by credit restrictions and where available, at interest rate as high as 21% annually. Other factors are dysfunctional land holding system, exorbitant cost of basic building materials and lack of sustainable mortgage system.

These factors have reduced activities in the building industry to owner built and occupied system rather than investment driven sector. Hence, the recession has little or no impact in the industry in Nigeria.

The negative indicators have always been there before the recession, during the recession and will be there after the recession until multi stakeholders approach of redefining the industry is adopted by the Government.

I am certain that the emergence of the sector in Nigeria will produce gold after this fire storm.
